Sidmouth FolkWeek is an unmissable week-long seaside celebration of music, dance and song taking place in the beautiful East Devon regency coastal resort.
‘There are festivals…and there’s Sidmouth. Still uniquely glorious and gloriously unique after all these years.’ Colin Irwin
Awarded a Blue Plaque last year in recognition of its cultural contribution to the South West region, this week-long seaside celebration of music, dance and song has been a major player in the festival calendar since 1955.
Held in the first week of August every year, the East Devon festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors to over 700 diverse events with broad ‘something for everyone’ appeal.
With an ear to the past and an eye on the future, FolkWeek features both established stars and emerging talent during its extensive eight day programme. The event features a diverse range of events: major concerts, lively roots parties, small intimate sessions, ceilidhs and folk dancing, storytelling, family entertainment and youth-centred sessions, hands-on workshops and spectacular dance displays, and the best in South West crafts and the tastiest of local food and drink.
Sidmouth, a stunning red-cliffed coastal location, comes alive during FolkWeek as the streets and venues burst with festive atmosphere and colour, and holidaymakers and festival goers join together in the friendliest music-based holiday of the summer.
“Britain’s oldest festival has itself become the stuff of folklore, yet it continues to influence musical trends and capture the hearts of all who visit. Sidmouth FolkWeek has undergone many transformations …. and while it represents many things to many people, the unique, varied and vibrant atmosphere is one that undeniably sets it apart.”
